First hunt in North Dakota, ever.

First and foremost, duck hunting is not for the faint of heart. Especially not free lance duck hunting. It didn’t take long for Chris and I to realize the effort that needed to be put in to get on some birds up here. With the weather being 20 degrees warmer then normal for this time of the year, birds have been rather hard to find. I can’t tell you the exact number of hours we have drove around scouting out ponds and fields but it’s been ALOT. Some areas had 5 here or 15 here but we wanted a little more security. Finally, we rolled up on a pond that had about 80 mallards on it and there was some Canadians farther toward the back. We drove about a mile up the road to a house and pulled in to ask for permission to hunt it. Knocked on the door, no answer. About a minute later we were greeted by the cutest old man on an old International 😊 Mr. Orvin was such a pleasure and about 30 mins after to getting to know him and hearing his story and how he lives off the land, he gave us the word to hunt the pond. Very cool and look forward to keeping in touch with him. We were off back to our little hunting cottage to get stuff ready for the am.

11/21/15 Opening Day in Florida!

This morning was a special treat! Lake X never ceases to amaze me. We set up at the mouth at 4:15am, geezy pete!…Chris thought we better get there early to beat the other hunters…haha!

Carson watched and asked questions as we put out decoys. We set up the spread and got into position. We still had about 45 mins until shooting time so we relaxed and star gazed. Carson ended up falling asleep (go figure) 🙂 We got to listen to a wood duck chatter his head off off in the decoys for a good 25 mins very cool! As the sun started to make her appearance the woodies started to take flight. We watched over 100 woodducks fly over us an sing. Right at shooting time came Chris noticed a single hen ringneck in the decoys cruising around. We decided to tag team her 🙂 1-2-BOOM! Belle took off to claim her prize. Carson slept through the shots. He woke up just as Belle was making her way back in the boat, duck in mouth. We waited 10-15 minutes with no action. Then all of a sudden Chris saw three ringnecks coming right down the shoot like they were on a string. I shot my first ringneck! I ended up shooting the hen and Chris shot the two drakes (lucky ass). Thank God we had Belle, the lily pads are so thick in Lake Juniper I doubt we would have picked up any ducks without her. The wrapped up our hunt and we started to pick up and head back. Carson digged it! #GodisGreat

11/3/15 – 11/4/15 Good Morning from Kansas!!!

Sooo Chris and I got a wild hair to just get out of town! We decided to pack up and take a trip to Kansas to get an early start on duck season 2015. After driving for 18 hours, yes 18 hours straight.. we arrived in Pratt, Kansas! Once we got our hotel and such we headed out for a quick afternoon scout. After a look around we headed back to the hotel to get stuff ready for the am.

12/28/14 Miss Belle

There are duck dogs, lap dogs, and family dogs…but there is only one Belle.

Just Chris and I this morning along side Miss Belle. We set up in the sound on the “lucky point”. This particular point very rarely lets us down where we don’t come out with a limit. This particular morning was very overcast and it made it hard for me to get a good shot of the ducks coming in but I did end up getting some good shots of Belle. Belle is 4 today, turning 5 this January. It truly is bitter sweet seeing her face turn gray. We set one big spread this time with thicker decoys on the outside edges hoping they will come right in the middle to us. We stood about 20 yards back and waited. Boom! Boom! Boom! Well Chris’ first time pulling the trigger that morning and down goes three bluebills. Three came in and zero left. I was very pumped as was Belle!!! Belle launched off her stand to pick up the deceased. We ended up with 1 bufflehead, 4 bluebills, and 2 surf scoters.
